THE sixth DC International Book Fair and cultural fest will begin at Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium on Thursday. The 12-day fair will be inaugurated by Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan at 5 p.m. Actress-filmmaker Nandita Das will be present at the inaugural function. O.N.V. Kurup will inaugurate the cultural fest.
The book fair will bring together some 300 international publishers and readers can choose from over 10 lakh books on a variety of topics, said Ravi Deecee, CEO of DC Books. The genres include fiction, non-fiction, translations, children’s literature, travel, cookery, music, arts and science, technology, self-help, architecture, business and management, finance and the like. And each day of the fest will be dedicated to eminent personalities.
There will be competitions for children, book releases, reading sessions and cultural programmes. On the first day, K. Balakrishnan’s ‘Kannurkota’ and K.P. Appan’s ‘Charithrathe Ningalkoppam Koottuka’ will be released. Parvathy Baul will present Baul music.
On the second day dedicated to Swati Thirunal, George Onakkoor’s ‘The Wind in the Mountains’ (translation of ‘Parvathangalile Kaattu’) will be released. Prince Rama Varma will lead the Swati Thirunal commemorative oration. The same evening, R.B. Sreekumar, ex-DGP of Gujarat, will be present at the release of his book ‘Gujarat: Irakalkku Vendiyulla Porattam’. It will be released along with P.M. Nair’s ‘Kalam Prabhavam’. Usman Bhai will present ghazals.
On November 1, dedicated to A.R. Rajaraja Varma, the 37th edition of Perumbadavam Sreedharan’s ‘Oru Sankeerthanam Pole’ will be released at 5 p.m. Forest Minister Binoy Viswam will be present. Actor Sreenivasan and U.A. Khader will attend another session on the same day, at 6.15 p.m. The books to be released are ‘Alighadil Oru Pasu’ by Anvar Abdullah, ‘Kamuki’ by B. Murali, ‘Kazhuthappulikalude Chiri’ by Vinu Abraham, ‘Prakasham Parathunna Aankutty’ by K.P. Ramanunni, ‘Pennudal Churayalukal’ by U.A. Khader and ‘Malabar Express’ by Shihabudheen Poithumkadavu. Wings will present a flute and piano concert.
With November 2 being dedicated to EMS, J. Raghu will deliver the commemorative lecture at 4 p.m. ‘Idam Thedi’ by Sreenandhu and ‘Gaddar: Paattum Porattavum’ by Mathulamani will be released. Polika, Thiruvananthapuram, will present folk music.
On November 3, Ayyankali will be remembered and Tamil writer Bama will lead the commemorative lecture. She will attend the day’s function along with Tamil writer Charu Niveditha and Minister G. Sudhakaran. The books under the Great Indian Literature series - ‘Panamullu’ by Bama, ‘Bhairavaragam’ by Bimal Mitra, ‘Parathi’ by Tarasankar Banerjee, ‘Aaranyathinte Adhikaram’ by Mahasweta Devi, ‘Mrithyunjayam’ by Beerendrakumar Bhattacharya and ‘Swargam Thedunna Manushyar’ by Sunil Gangopadhyaya - will be released the same evening. ‘Khazakkinte Ithihasathilude’, a play based on O.V. Vijayan’s ‘Khazakkinte Ithihasam’, will be staged.
November 4 will be dedicated to P.K. Balakrishnan and the books to be released on that day are ‘Hijadakalude Porul’ by P. Surendran and ‘Iranginadappu’ by Tessy Mariyam. ‘Prakasham Parathunna Penkuttikal’, a drama based on the famous short stories by T. Padmanabhan, will be staged in the evening.
Thikkurissi Sukumaran Nair will be remembered on November 5. The 25th edition of O.N.V. Kurup’s ‘Bhoomikku Oru Charamageetham’ will be released along with S.P. Ramesh’s ‘Dwaipayanam’. A documentary based on ‘Bhoomikku Oru Charamageetham’, directed by Sarath, will be screened.
V.S. Achuthanandan will be the chief guest on November 6. ‘Malayalikal Ingane Marikkano’ written by Sibi Mathews, ADGP-Intelligence, and poetry collections will be released.
On November 7, Elamkulam Kunjan Pillai will be remembered. Soorya will present the play ‘Premalekhanam’ in the evening.
Aravindan will be remembered on November 8. Besides book releases, there will be a Santoor concert by Aalamkod Hari. On November 9, Finance Minister Thomas Isaac will release his book ‘Kendra Samsthana Bandhangal.’
There will be literary and theatre contests for children as part of the book fair. These include quiz programmes (October 31 and November 1), poetry writing (November 4and November 5), reading (November 3), painting (November 2), story writing (November 6 and 7), essay writing (November 8) and book review (November 9). அதுதான் எனக்கும் புரிய மாட்டேங்குது...! இப்படிக் கொண்டாடுபவர்கள் மத்தியில் எழுதி ராஜாவாய் இருக்கலாமே..! அதை விட்டு விட்டு ஏன் தமிழில் எழுதி, புலம்ப வேண்டும்...!
யாரும் எதையும் எப்படியும் எழுதலாம். நமது ஜனநாயக நாட்டில் அதற்கு உரிமை உண்டு. ஆனால், நான் எழுதுவதை எவனும் படிக்க வருவதில்லை; பைசா தருவதில்லை என்று புலம்புவது, தனி மனிதனாக அல்லது எழுத்தாளன் என்ற நிலையில் எண்ணிப் பார்க்க முடியவில்லை.
அவருடைய ஆதர்ஷமான மகாகவி பாரதி, எங்கும் இப்படிப் புலம்பியதாக நான் கேள்விப்பட்டதில்லை.
